Innovation Week 2016: Future Ed Event – Wednesday 26th October, 12-3pm

As part of Sydney’s 2016 Innovation Week, the Library, Educational Innovation and ICT invite staff and students to Future Ed.

Future Ed invites you to drop-in to explore, create, and discuss the future of education and how new technologies might be part of this. You will also be able to register for hands-on introductory workshops on 3D printers, carving machines and more.

Hosted in ThinkSpace, the Library’s new creative space, students and staff can experience virtual reality headsets, robots and 3D printers. Described as something of a ‘petting-zoo’ for new technologies, Future Ed not only showcases educational tools but allows staff and students from across the university to meet, mix and collaborate. The Future Ed event hopes to provide a space for staff and students to develop innovative solutions to current and future projects.

In addition to 3D printers, a desktop carving machine, and graphic design facilities are also a range of computers and other technologies. Future Ed will be supported by a team of Peer Learning Advisers (PLAs), who are student heralding from disciplines across the University. They are there to help visitors use technology, like the VR and Occulus Rift headsets, the HP Sprout 3D scanner and the 3D printers. Come and see how technology is used to augment and enhance experiential learning and research-led teaching.

Future Ed Workshops

Wearable Electronics

1 x three hour workshop

In this workshop Mitch Bryson, from the Australian Centre for Field Robotics, will give you an overview of the world of electronic wearables and soft electronics, and introduce you to basic concepts in electronics, programming and sewing that allow them to make an electronic softie. You will build a small electronic softie project: a rainbow flower that you can take away at the end of the day. In the process, you will learn about the Arduino open‐source electronics platform, fabric and stitch electronic circuits, including conductive thread and how to control basic electronic components like a colourful LED.

This short workshop introduces you to the MakerBot 3D printer in ThinkSpace and steps you through the process; from finding designs online or making your own (or using free online tools), to setting up the printer to print.
