Design for diversity with UDL
Designing for diversity means anticipating and valuing learner variability from the outset. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides an evidence-informed framework to achieve this.
UDL guides the proactive design of learning environments to be accessible and challenging for all students. It is based on the premise that we can intentionally design the learning environment to fit the diverse needs of students, not the other way around. To support UDL in practice, a 5-step designing for diversity process has been developed. This process provides an inclusive and manageable approach to applying UDL in a range of contexts and supports researchers and practitioners to design, evaluate and report on UDL-aligned practice. It is informed by the UDL reporting criteria (K.Rao et al., 2018).
Through a growing collection of stories of impact, the UDL@Sydney resource site showcases practical ways that UDL is being used to design for diversity across disciplines. It also connects and inspires academic and professional staff through a regular UDLchat community.
