At the heart of every successful learning experience is access to quality resources. The Library’s Reading Lists service exemplifies this by ensuring students have seamless access to the course readings they need to excel in their study. This partnership between the University Library and academic staff empowers students with knowledge while streamlining the teaching process.

The value of the Reading Lists Library service

From core textbooks to supplementary articles, the Reading Lists service curates and provides access to essential reading materials. By leveraging the Reading List tool in Canvas, academics save time by adding resources directly from library collections, while ensuring students have access to a centralised repository of carefully selected resources. The library team works diligently to ensure materials are current, accessible, and compliant with copyright requirements.

This service is not just about convenience—it directly supports academic success. When students have easy access to their readings, they can engage more deeply with course content, participate meaningfully in discussions, and develop the critical thinking skills required to thrive. We know that engaging with a Reading List is a useful predictor of performance.

Supporting academics for student success

In 2024, the Reading Lists service managed 2,695 course lists and had 164,617 active students using the system. Those students downloaded 136,000 reading items. In partnering with academics in each of the faculties and schools, this collaboration is essential in equipping students with the knowledge and tools they need to achieve their academic goals.

By using the Reading List tool, academics ensure that students have timely access to their materials within Canvas. Established support pathways helps streamline the process, resolve potential challenges, and it provides students with a reliable and enriched learning experience.

A commitment to academic excellence

The University Library remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting teaching and learning through the Readings Lists service. By fostering partnerships with academics and continuously enhancing its offerings, the library plays a critical role in shaping a successful academic journey for students.
