Tristan Lay

I am a Lecturer in German Studies and Director of the Diploma of Language Studies at the University of Sydney. I hold a PhD and MA in Applied Linguistics from Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), Germany. My academic work is situated at the intersection of German as a Foreign Language (GFL), Applied Linguistics, and Educational Linguistics. I bring extensive teaching and research experience from Germany, Taiwan, and Australia, which shapes my comparative and cross-cultural perspective on language learning and teaching. My research spans Applied and Educational Linguistics, Methodology and Didactics of Foreign Languages, and German as a Foreign/Second Language (GFL/GSL). Areas of expertise include Teaching German with Films, Visual Arts in Foreign Language Education, the German language in Taiwan and in Australia, Design of teaching and learning material, Landeskunde, Erinnerungsorte (Lieu de mémoire), Tertiary Language Teaching and Learning (L1 Mandarin, L2 English, L3 German), as well as Multiple Language Acquisition and Learning.
