[2B1] Designing to the edges with UDL: A first-year writing case study

How can designing a unit of study using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles change the way you think about course readings and learning activities? This presentation will briefly introduce the UDL framework and outline a pilot project of re-designing a large first-year writing unit – WRIT1001 – using UDL strategies. In this presentation, Benjamin Miller and Sarah Humphries will share two examples from the pilot project: where the presentation of course readings was reimagined to improve engagement, and where a film screening was re-presented to prioritise the learning outcome over the completion of a particular activity. Overall, designing with UDL has improved access and engagement for students at ‘the edges’ of the unit by creating outcome-focused teaching activities with multiple pathways to success for students.
