There are three systems at the University which come together to allow students to view lecture recordings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\">Canvas<\/a> is the place where students access videos; the Echo Player is published in Canvas from Echo360.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/1316\/pages\/introduction-to-echo360?module_item_id=42650\">Echo360<\/a> (and its <a href=\"https:\/\/admin.streaming.sydney.edu.au:8443\/ess\/login.jsp\">administration portal<\/a>) is a background application which hosts all the files and can be used if you need to edit a video or upload extra videos manually (though we&#8217;d recommend using <a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/thinking-canvas-arc-turns-videos-two-way-learning-experiences\/\">Arc in Canvas<\/a> for this).<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bookings-streaming.sydney.edu.au\/\">Lecture Recording Booking System<\/a>\u00a0(LRBS) is middleware developed by the University to manage the relationship between Canvas, Echo360, and our timetabling data to auto-generate bookings for timetabled lectures. \u00a0The LRBS is where you can make a manual\u00a0booking, manage your existing bookings, change download\/streaming settings, or double check the auto-generated bookings which come from timetabling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Overview of workflow and key differences<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7636\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7636\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Echoplayer-screenshot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7636 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Echoplayer-screenshot-300x124.jpg\" alt=\"The Echo Player is embedded in Canvas\" width=\"300\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Echoplayer-screenshot-300x124.jpg 300w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Echoplayer-screenshot-768x318.jpg 768w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Echoplayer-screenshot-1024x423.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Echoplayer-screenshot-370x153.jpg 370w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Echoplayer-screenshot-570x236.jpg 570w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Echoplayer-screenshot-770x318.jpg 770w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Echoplayer-screenshot-1170x484.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Echoplayer-screenshot-1402x580.jpg 1402w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Echoplayer-screenshot.jpg 1475w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7636\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Echo Player within Canvas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The use of Echo360 and the Lecture Recording Booking System will continue, but will feed into Canvas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is one major change from Blackboard:<\/strong> Echo360 will display in your Canvas site using the &#8216;Echo Center&#8217; which is visually similar to a YouTube channel where there is a large video window paired with a sidebar containing the other lecture recordings from your unit. It is an all-in-one player and provides a much better student experience compared to the long series of individual Echo links in Blackboard. Students and teachers can access it via the &#8216;Lecture Recordings&#8217; menu item.<\/p>\n<h2>Lecture Recording Caveats<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Only the unit coordinator can edit lecture recordings (via Echo360) or bookings (via LRBS) by default.<\/strong> It is possible to delegate this task to other course instructors or support staff. \u00a0The coordinator can contact the Educational Innovation Helpdesk (<a href=\"mailto:elearning@sydney.edu.au\">elearning@sydney.edu.au<\/a>) to get additional staff\u00a0added to access the Echo360 administration portal and LRBS.<\/li>\n<li>Lecture recordings (Echoes)\u00a0<strong>can only be edited for 28 days following the date they are uploaded<\/strong> into Echo360. \u00a0If you need to make edits to an older echo, please contact the Educational Innovation Helpdesk for further assistance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Delayed publishing:<\/strong>\u00a0the Echo360 system receives hundreds of lectures each hour during semester and processes them 42 at a time. Therefore, it is typical for a delay of several hours before an Echo is ready. It automatically schedules lectures and seminars for recording for all timetabled bookings in lecture rooms and theatres. This can cause some issues for units that have combined lectures or combined Canvas sites, but they can be readily resolved by working with the Educational Innovation Helpdesk team.\u00a0Lectures which take place in smaller seminar rooms must be booked in manually by the LRBS.<\/p>\n<p>Below we\u2019ve broken down the main features of the LRBS. The recommended option is to offer lectures via\u00a0both streaming and downloading as many students have slow or limited data usage at home. This must be weighed against the privacy requirements in your unit. <strong>The default setting is streaming only.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the video below, you\u2019ll see the options available to you for recording, streaming, and downloading. Every situation is catered for, which makes for a long list. There are various permutations of streaming only or streaming plus downloading options for students.
