{"id":5501,"date":"2017-08-17T00:08:43","date_gmt":"2017-08-16T14:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/?p=5501"},"modified":"2018-03-29T09:34:07","modified_gmt":"2018-03-28T22:34:07","slug":"edtool-tips-9-canvas-turnitin-guide-new-setup-workflow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/edtool-tips-9-canvas-turnitin-guide-new-setup-workflow\/","title":{"rendered":"EdTool Tips #9: Canvas and Turnitin &#8211; Guide to New Setup and Workflow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m really excited to be working in the central Educational Innovation team on the transition to Canvas. \u00a0As our <a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/open-canvas-sites\/\">early adopters<\/a> begin to hit their first round of assessment using Turnitin inside Canvas, we have begun to accumulate a lot of knowledge about setting up and marking your assignments.<\/p>\n<p>Turnitin is a key system due to its mandatory use for all formal written assessments. \u00a0Keep reading for a few key points which will assist you in setting up and using Turnitin in Canvas.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Top Level Differences for Canvas Compared To Blackboard and Turnitin<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5519\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5519\" style=\"width: 251px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/nested-russian-doll.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5519\" src=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/nested-russian-doll.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/4\/43\/Recursive_Matrena_01.jpg\" width=\"251\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5519\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Turnitin Assignments are now &#8216;nested&#8217; inside a Canvas AssignmentTurnitin Assignments are now nested inside a Canvas Assignment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Turnitin setup and submission windows are <strong>integrated<\/strong> into Canvas&#8217; design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>There are now <strong>two places for settings on each assignment in terms of dates and points<\/strong>: you&#8217;ll need to make sure you avoid incongruencies in these settings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A few things have remained the same as they were in Blackboard, but are worth highlighting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Communication is still a <strong>one way street<\/strong>. \u00a0Information flows from Turnitin to Canvas, but not the other way around. \u00a0As such, you&#8217;ll need to ensure you elect to enter either all of your marks <em>through<\/em> Turnitin, or all of your marks <em>outside of<\/em> Turnitin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>You&#8217;ll need to <strong>select a single system for marking<\/strong>. \u00a0Either in Turnitin&#8217;s GradeMark or in Canvas&#8217; SpeedGrader. Turnitin GradeMark has familiar and powerful features like QuickMarks for easy and rapid feedback provision, as well as offline marking using their app.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Marks columns in Canvas (equivalent to Grade Centre columns in Blackboard) are visible by default, you&#8217;ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-10318\">&#8216;mute&#8217; them<\/a> in your Canvas gradebook as part of your workflow in creating Turnitin Dropboxes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Details on the Turnitin settings themselves or questions about the Blackboard instance can be found in a <a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/edtool-tips-7-turnitin-dropbox-simple-setup-short-long-answers\/\">previous EdTool Tips Post<\/a>. These settings that reside within Turnitin (e.g. around originality reports, assignment repositories, exclusion options, etc) and their meanings remain unchanged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ll keep this post uncharacteristically short since we&#8217;ve put together a detailed guide for using Turnitin in Canvas:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/1316\/pages\/turnitin-basics-create-a-turnitin-assignment\" class=\"sc-button bg-red color-white\" target=\"_self\">\r\n\t\t\t   \t\t<span>Take me to the guide<\/span>\r\n\t\t\t    <\/a>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Setting up a Turnitin Dropbox in Canvas<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Quick setup<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4>Part 1 of setup \u2013 Canvas assignment shell<\/h4>\n<div class=\"sc-columns half clearfix\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<ol>\n<li>Go to \u2018Assignments\u2019 in the left hand panel of your site. In the top right click on the red \u2018+ Assignment\u2019 button.<\/li>\n<li>Here you can name your assignment, set the number of possible points (no more than 100 points) and set due and availability dates.<\/li>\n<li>Set the \u2018Submission Type\u2019 to \u2018External Tool\u2019. Click \u2018Find\u2019 which opens up a pop-up box with external tools listed in alphabetical order. Click on \u2018Settings\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Turnitin\u2019s settings for the assignment will be in a default state; the Canvas settings you made in the previous part do not propagate through to Turnitin. <strong>You will need to check settings to avoid losing any marks<\/strong> as follows:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The assignment title cannot be modified \u2013 this can only be done in the Canvas options for the assignment.<\/li>\n<li>The \u2018Max Grade\u2019 must be set no higher than 100 points.<\/li>\n<li>Set the Turnitin Start and Due Dates as identical to the Canvas dates and set a reasonable \u2018Feedback Release Date\u2019 for your assignment (this is akin to the \u2018Post Date\u2019 Turnitin setting in the Blackboard environment). Turnitin defaults to using the same time as the \u2018Due Date\u2019 for the &#8216;Feedback Release Date&#8217; which does not make sense for a manually marked assignment: we recommend choosing a date several months in advance and modifying the setting later when you have completed your marking.<\/li>\n<li>Please select \u2018Yes\u2019 to \u2018Allow submission of any file type?\u2019 to avoid problems with student submissions.<\/li>\n<li>Expand and review the \u2018Optional Settings\u2019 (which are anything but optional). <a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/edtool-tips-7-turnitin-dropbox-simple-setup-short-long-answers\/\">Review these settings<\/a> to ensure they are set correctly for your assignment dropbox.<\/li>\n<li>Set the \u2018Originality Report generation and resubmissions\u2019 dropdown menu to \u2018Generate reports on due date\u2019. This allows flexibly in terms of late or special consideration student submissions in the software.<\/li>\n<li>It is also necessary to set \u2018Allow late submissions?\u2019 to \u2018Yes\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Quick video demonstration<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is a 2 minute setup. \u00a0The first is a 1 minute demo on creating the Canvas shell. \u00a0The second shows you how to navigate to the Turnitin settings area and I click through the recommended Turnitin settings.<\/p>\n<p>In the first video I elected to not select any dates for the Start and Due dates, but if I had put dates and times in, they would need to perfectly match my date and time selections in the Turnitin settings. \u00a0The advantage of setting up dates in Canvas is that this will show up in the student&#8217;s Canvas calendar. \u00a0The calendar in Canvas is far more useful than in Blackboard, the main advantage being that it is auto-populated from all Canvas assignments.<\/p>\n<p>In the second video you&#8217;ll see more familiar content in the Turnitin Settings. \u00a0These are the same as in Blackboard, but are visually distinct. \u00a0Instead of fully importing the Turnitin interface, Canvas has elected to offer a more consistent visual and navigation experience.<\/p>\n<h4>Part 1 &#8211;
