{"id":4412,"date":"2017-05-26T13:50:49","date_gmt":"2017-05-26T03:50:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/?p=4412"},"modified":"2017-06-02T16:49:18","modified_gmt":"2017-06-02T06:49:18","slug":"student-ambassadors-cultural-competence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/student-ambassadors-cultural-competence\/","title":{"rendered":"Student ambassadors for cultural competence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2015, the theme of the Sydney Teaching Colloquium was \u2018cultural competence is everyone\u2019s business\u2019.\u00a0 The university community met on 4<sup>th<\/sup> November to explore the issues, challenges and success stories around embedding cultural competence in pedagogy and curriculum. Take a look at the short highlights video below.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7Ia9dneaJCA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Six undergraduate student ambassadors were involved in the Colloquium: Longen Lan (Advanced Science\/Law), Rosie Menzies (Advanced Science), Suji Jeong (Commerce\/Arts), Tracy Trieu (Commerce \/ Liberal Studies), and Ann Wen (Arts \/Law).\u00a0 These students worked with Tai Peseta and Amani Bell in, what was then called the Institute for Teaching and Learning (now Educational Innovation). This student and staff partnership worked to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>provide their knowledge, experience and understanding about the demands of being a student to the Colloquium planning processes<\/li>\n<li>develop resources that engage the wider student and university community<\/li>\n<li>participate in panels and group discussions at the Colloquium<\/li>\n<li>collect, analyse and present data at various stages of the Colloquium process<\/li>\n<li>participate in a research project about the Ambassador scheme<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>#sydteach15 congratulation all fantastic day &#8211; my highlight student ambassadors they made an old man think afresh &#8211; simple and powerful &#8211; student presentation so clear honest and powerful cultural competence is essential in a quality uni experience &amp; education &#8211; <strong>Professor Shane Houston<\/strong> (Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy and Services)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A highlight of the Colloquium was the students\u2019 \u2018walk the line\u2019 presentation, which can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nd-5IwCX-cY&amp;list=PLEFiyxDXk0zqDt0G0H-6Qe4ljXW45l7dI&amp;index=7&amp;t=816s\" target=\"_blank\">seen here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The students have shared their reflections about their experiences in a soon to be published article for the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/repository.brynmawr.edu\/tlthe\/\" target=\"_blank\">Teaching and Learning Together in Higher Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The success of this initiative led to a project in 2016 where six students worked in collaboration with five unit coordinators to\u00a0improve student learning about cultural competence in five units of study, including <a href=\"https:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/cultural-competence-within-introduction-geology-geos1003\/\" target=\"_blank\">geology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/cultural-competence-engineering\/\" target=\"_blank\">project management<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4423\" src=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/stc-ambassadors-2015.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/stc-ambassadors-2015.jpg 600w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/stc-ambassadors-2015-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/stc-ambassadors-2015-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/stc-ambassadors-2015-370x370.jpg 370w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/stc-ambassadors-2015-570x570.jpg 570w, https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/stc-ambassadors-2015-580x580.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>L to R:<\/strong> Tracy Trieu, Stephanie Barahona, Ann Wen, Dr. Tim Soutphommasane (Australia&#8217;s\u00a0Race Discrimination Commissioner), Suji Jeong, Rosie Menzies and Longen Lan<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main image:<\/strong> \u2018A living method\u2019 by Professor Juanita Sherwood was chosen as the image for the 2015 Sydney Teaching Colloquium because it reminds us that to be collaborative cultural learners, we need to reflect on the many influences that shape our journeys. Circles are used within Indigenous cultures to illustrate the holistic nature of ways of knowing and being.
