{"id":3977,"date":"2017-04-05T11:38:08","date_gmt":"2017-04-05T01:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/?p=3977"},"modified":"2017-04-05T11:38:08","modified_gmt":"2017-04-05T01:38:08","slug":"happened-week-4-open-door","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/happened-week-4-open-door\/","title":{"rendered":"What happened at Week 4 \/\/ Open Door?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Run from 27 until 31 March, Week 4 \/\/ Open Door is a University-wide event designed to enable all staff to see how others teach and to observe how innovative approaches work in practice.<\/p>\n<p>With 95 classes offered in the program, the event showcased a wide range of disciplines, class types and teaching techniques.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QrxK3NeJNnw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Held across five campuses, the \u2018open door\u2019 classes allowed staff to sit with students and watch how they reacted, learned and engaged with the various approaches to teaching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis week was an opportunity for staff to open up their classrooms for other staff to watch, and for the observers to see what students are seeing,\u201d said <a class=\"usyd-js-load\" href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/people\/adam.bridgeman.php\">Professor Adam Bridgeman<i class=\"icon-link-ext\"><\/i><\/a>, Director of Educational Innovation in the Education Portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hold Week 4 \/\/ Open Door to enable our teachers to learn tricks and get tips from other teachers to take back into their own classrooms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was fantastic to see so many classes open this week and so many people attending. I\u2019d really like to thank all those who put themselves forward and participated,\u201d said Professor Bridgeman.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Chellos, from the Conservatorium of Music, who attended Dr Rowena Cowley\u2019s third-year pedagogy voice class at the Conservatorium, said: \u201cI came out of interest, because I know this lecturer is a fantastic teacher, so I wanted to see her style. She was very informative, engaging and inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So what happened? \/>\nSchool of Chemistry, Faculty of Science<\/h2>\n<p><a class=\"usyd-js-load\" href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/science\/people\/adrian.george.php\">Dr Adrian George<i class=\"icon-link-ext\"><\/i><\/a> ran an engaging first-year chemistry lecture for Bachelor of Pharmacy students, focusing on acids and bases.<\/p>\n<p>Using a variety of methods, Dr George kept his students\u2019 attention by breaking up the lecture with chemistry demonstrations (bright colours and humour!), and worksheet problems that they solved together on screen.<\/p>\n<p>Getting laughs out of a morning chemistry lecture is no easy task, and Dr George\u2019s warm, amusing and informative tone was obviously appreciated by his students.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3981\" href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/music\/staff-profiles\/rowena.cowley.php\">Dr Rowena Cowley<i class=\"icon-link-ext\"><\/i><\/a> shared her vast experience in teaching singing with her third-year pedagogy voice class, focusing on posture, anatomy and breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Making her class interactive, Dr Cowley used discussions, demonstrations and physical activities to engage her students, bringing the information to life with active student participation.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously well-liked and respected, Dr Cowley brought to her class her warmth, knowledge and impressive ability to address class in Week 4 \/\/ Open Door.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Dr Frances Di Lauro<br \/>\nDirector of the Writing Hub, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences<\/h2>\n<p><a class=\"usyd-js-load\" href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/arts\/writing_hub\/staff\/profiles\/frances.dilauro.php\">Dr Frances Di Lauro<i class=\"icon-link-ext\"><\/i><\/a> developed an interesting and stimulating Writing Hub class for second-year students on argumentation: theory and practice.
