that is students\u2019 work is assessed as being on the scale of 0-100% divided commonly into merit grades: High Distinction (HD), Distinction (DI), Credit (CR), Pass (PS) and Fail (including Absent Fail to indicate non-completion of a mandatory part of the assessment). <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\">Many of us take this system <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\">for granted<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\">, and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\">don\u2019t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\"> question whether grading is always a fair<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\"> sensible<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\">or helpful <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\">way to assess <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\">student learning. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\">However, there is evidence that using a &#8220;pass\/fail&#8221; system might have benefits, particularly in first year units and units that have learning outcomes <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\">predominantly focused<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261117288 BCX0\"> on skills and competencies, such as those in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/students\/explore-open-learning-environment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Learning Environment<\/a> (OLE).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW261117288 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"TextRun MacChromeBold SCXW132096911 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">A brief history<\/span><\/span><span class=\"LineBreakBlob BlobObject DragDrop SCXW132096911 BCX0\"><span class=\"SCXW132096911 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">Interestingly, before the late 1<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">8<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun Superscript SCXW132096911 BCX0\" data-fontsize=\"12\">th<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\"> century <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">it seems that grading<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">wasn\u2019t<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">a common practice<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">. <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW132096911 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.jchemed.1c00369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW132096911 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Bowen and Cooper (2022)<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> <span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW132096911 BCX0\">report that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW132096911 BCX0\">Harvard and Yale used family status as a way to rank students up until around 1814.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\"> After that there <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">was a gradual introduction of s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">tudent ranking<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\"> in American institutions<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\"> based<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\"> around <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">performance, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">with the introduction of grading on a curve <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">with a normal distribution becoming more common from the 1930s onwards (<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">Corey, 1930<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">, in <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.jchemed.1c00369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bowen and Cooper, 2022<\/a><\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132096911 BCX0\">). In the UK, ranking based on perceived merit in oral and written exams seems to have been common from around the late 1700s.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Reasons to not grade<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the book \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sydney.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/61USYD_INST\/1c0ug48\/alma991032269804205106\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ungrading: Why rating students undermines learning (and what to do instead)\u201d<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Susan Blum and others look at the negative effects of grading on students and learning. Key arguments in the book are that\u00a0grades do <em>not<\/em> serve as effective motivators for students. They often promote incorrect values, prioritising the products of assessment over the process of learning and development of understanding.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0They argue that grades may not accurately represent learning progress. Instead, grades actually frequently reflect a student&#8217;s ability to stick to guidelines and regurgitate information, rather than the extent of their learning. Grades fail to capture the unique, subjective, and often emotional nature of learning. A<span class=\"TextRun SCXW191145913 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart CommentHighlightPipeRestV2 CommentHighlightRest SCXW191145913 BCX0\">\u00a0systematic review of the literature of reduced grading by <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW191145913 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0742051X23003244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW191145913 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW191145913 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Normann et al., (2023)<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW191145913 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW191145913 BCX0\"> showed that there is little evidence to suggest that getting a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed CommentHighlightRest SCXW191145913 BCX0\">low grade<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW191145913 BCX0\"> prompts students to try harder<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW191145913 BCX0\">.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The authors also argue that grades do not provide constructive feedback. They oversimplify complex tasks by reducing them to numerical values (like 8\/10, 85%) and at the same time, they become overly complex, providing too many variations that can be confusing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Additionally, they argue that grading can foster a competitive environment rather than a collaborative one. Even seemingly benevolent practices like grading on a curve or norming, actually intensify competition by making students (and occasionally teachers) compete against each other.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0This can manifest itself in many ways, including extended discussions with markers on the marks awarded and the marks deducted rather than how to improve the work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What does the literature tell us about using pass\/fail grading?<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are a number of studies that have looked at units with pass\/fail grading, and the benefits it can have. These studies are mainly from medical education and health sciences, with some studies in other areas of STEM.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>To reduce stress and anxiety<\/h3>\n<p>One significant advantage of pass\/fail grading is its potential to reduce stress and anxiety among students. <a href=\"https:\/\/asmepublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1365-2923.2011.03989.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spring et al., (2011)<\/a> conducted a systematic search of the literature over a 30 year period and found that pass\/fail grading improved students\u2019 feelings of anxiety. This is crucial for first-year students who are often transitioning to a new and challenging academic environment. By removing the pressure associated with traditional grading systems, pass\/fail evaluation can create a more supportive learning environment that allows students to focus on their studies without excessive worry about grades. Another study from medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/academicmedicine\/fulltext\/2009\/05000\/a_change_to_pass_fail_grading_in_the_first_two.28.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(Bloodgood et al. ,2009)<\/a> suggests that implementing a pass\/fail grading system led to enhanced student satisfaction and improved well-being. The study highlights that the shift to a pass\/fail system offered specific benefits to medical students, boosting their psychological well-being and satisfaction without compromising their academic performance.<\/p>\n<h3>To improve equity<\/h3>\n<p>Furthermore, pass\/fail grading can provide a more equitable assessment approach for students with diverse academic backgrounds. <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10459-009-9211-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White &amp; Fantone, (2009)<\/a> found that for first-year university students, who may come from varied educational settings, a pass\/fail system can help level the playing field and ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to succeed. Another study looking at first year pharmacy education found that implementing a pass\/fail system significantly reduced stress, increased group cohesion and improved academic outcomes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajpe.org\/article\/S0002-9459(23)04358-9\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spiess et al., 2022<\/a>).\u00a0<span class=\"TextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1021\/acs.jchemed.1c00369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bowen and Cooper (2021)<\/a> argue that t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\">he idea of grading on a curve assumes that students&#8217; abilities are spread out in a normal distribution. This perspective overlooks the fact that social and cultural factors also influence student performance. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\">It&#8217;s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\"> crucial to remember that various life factors <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\">determine<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\"> who gets to go to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW141827183 BCX0\">university<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\">and who <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\">doesn&#8217;t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\">, for example,<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW244499179 BCX0\"> systemic racism might affect the chances and success of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW244499179 BCX0\">equity groups such as<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW244499179 BCX0\"> First Nations people<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW244499179 BCX0\">, people living with a disability<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW244499179 BCX0\"> and others<\/span>. Moreover, some students go to underfunded and understaffed schools where they have limited exposure to subjects like advanced mathematics. Hence, the concept of an &#8220;average&#8221; student <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\">isn&#8217;t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\"> realistic, especially in the diverse classrooms of the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\">21<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun Superscript SCXW141827183 BCX0\" data-fontsize=\"12\">st<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\"> century<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141827183 BCX0\">, where students have unique needs and backgrounds.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW141827183 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>To encourage mastery of skills<\/h3>\n<p>In the context of engineering, science, and humanities disciplines, there is evidence supporting the effectiveness of pass\/fail grading systems in assessing student achievement, particularly in courses that focus on skills and competencies. Research in engineering education has explored the benefits of pass\/fail grading in ensuring that students meet critical competencies, which is especially relevant for professional programs like engineering (<a href=\"https:\/\/ojs.library.queensu.ca\/index.php\/PCEEA\/article\/view\/15929\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zhuang et al. 2022<\/a>). Additionally, studies have highlighted the use of standards-based grading in engineering courses as a means to assess student performance based on defined learning objectives and competencies (<a href=\"https:\/\/online-journals.org\/index.php\/i-jep\/article\/view\/6472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Post, 2017<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/peer.asee.org\/standards-based-specifications-grading-in-a-hybrid-course\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mendez, n.d.<\/a>). <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10459-009-9211-1\">White and Fantone (2009)<\/a> found that pass\/fail grading systems might encourage students to focus on mastering the subject matter rather than merely striving for high grades. This shift in focus can lead to a deeper understanding of the course material and can promote lifelong learning habits.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\">A <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\">quantitative analysis by <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW49743649 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/03075079.2023.2233007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW49743649 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Kj\u00e6<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">rgaard et al (2023)<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\">found that grade<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\">less learning can <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\">improve students\u2019 motivation and reduce surface learning<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\">a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\">t the same time as having<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\"> no significant negative effect on student\u2019s later academic achievements. They <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\">found that gradeless courses enabled students to focus more on soft skills and that students were more comfortable in engaging in colla<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW49743649 BCX0\">borative work.\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><span class=\"LineBreakBlob BlobObject DragDrop SCXW49743649 BCX0\"><span class=\"SCXW49743649 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW49743649 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The case for pass\/fail units at Sydney<\/h2>\n<p>At Sydney, &#8220;pass\/fail&#8221; units return a grade of &#8220;Satisfied Requirements&#8221; (SR) or &#8220;Failed Requirements&#8221; (FR). These grades are recorded on the students&#8217; transcripts but are not included in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/students\/weighted-average-mark.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Weighted Average Mark<\/a>. According to Schedule 1 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/policies\/showdoc.aspx?recnum=PDOC2014\/378&amp;RendNum=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coursework Policy<\/a>, in these units &#8220;student achievement is measured as a pass or fail only without a mark to students who, in their performance in assessment tasks, demonstrate the learning outcomes for the unit at an acceptable standard as defined by grade descriptors or exemplars established by the faculty&#8221;.\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW249148159 BCX0\">This is an important definition. While &#8216;pass&#8217; is used in both systems, in the graded system it means that a student somehow accumulated 50 marks, without addressing any specific learning outcome. By contrast, in the ungraded system, it means that the learning outcomes have been met satisfactorily. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW249148159 BCX0\">So<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW249148159 BCX0\">\u00a0a pass in one may not constitute a pass in the other. Naturally, assessments in the ungraded system need to reflect the need for students to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW249148159 BCX0\">demonstrate<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW249148159 BCX0\"> satisfactory or unsatisfactory attainment of learning outcomes. Most current assessment tasks are not structured in this way (<a href=\"https:\/\/ltr.edu.au\/resources\/ID14-3652_Schmid_Final%20Report_2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schmid et al., 2018<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span>In 2024, students are enrolled in 538 such units compared to 4827 units which return both grades and marks, with total enrolments of around 31000 and 471000 students respectively. The table below shows the breakdown across the University.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Table 1:\u00a0<\/strong>Number of pass\/fail units (with total enrolments in parenthesis) by faculty and level in 2024. Students satisfaction is also higher in these units with a mean of Q1-6 in the Unit of Study Survey (USS) of 4.32 compared to 4.24 in other units in 2023.
