{"id":20750,"date":"2024-04-18T09:19:56","date_gmt":"2024-04-17T23:19:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/?p=20750"},"modified":"2024-04-18T09:19:56","modified_gmt":"2024-04-17T23:19:56","slug":"illuminating-team-culture-how-lightboards-have-revolutionised-tutor-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/illuminating-team-culture-how-lightboards-have-revolutionised-tutor-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Illuminating Team Culture: How Lightboards Have Revolutionised Tutor Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Together we teach in BCMB2X01<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">iochemistry and Molecular Biology, a second-year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> unit of study with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">over 800<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> students enrolled across <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">40 different degrees<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">spanning science, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">medicine, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">psychology<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, engineering and arts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Our students typically join us from <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">diverse backgrounds and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">different interests,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">so<\/span><strong> with a large coordination team it\u2019s important that we have a united strategy when it comes to content delivery.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Brightening up our content<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Teaching in our discipline is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">most effective using the incremental storyboarding and concept mapping approaches traditionally associated with whiteboards.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">For example, we can work through calculations <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">writ<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">each step<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">in real time as we explain the process.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/whiteboard-no-lightboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> We saw the lightboard<\/a> as the modern extension to this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><strong>aimed to create<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong> videos that were fun, engaging, and (let&#8217;s face it!) put the &#8216;talent&#8217; in the spotlight<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We aimed to address two concerns with these lightboard videos; students needing more time to understand concepts, especially calculations, and students not feeling prepared for practical classes, even after reading through the notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>We prepared videos using the lightboard to explain biochemical calculations and to help them prepare for practical classes.\u00a0<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Students found the lightboard style to be engaging and helpful with their study<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, with much-increased engagement<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0so far this semester<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I absolutely love the lightboard videos, they are always super informative and helpful.\u202f There is also something about the floating writing which makes it so visually satisfying\u2026 as someone who is not the strongest mathematically these videos are great in breaking down concepts in easily digestible fragments, instead of loads and loads of calculations in one video.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&#8211;<span data-contrast=\"auto\">BCMB2X01 student<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Surprisingly, the primary beneficiaries of these videos have not been the students but the tutors and demonstrators <\/strong>(teaching assistants, or\u00a0TAs).<span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is important because TAs are pivotal in determining the success or failure of a u<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nit of s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tudy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">TAs <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">often <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">work closely with students in smaller groups and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">shape the learning experience. Interacting with students on a personal level, they influence the overall mood and attitude of the class.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Illuminating our teachers<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Large u<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nits of s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tudy <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can have <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">teaching teams of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">up to 70 TAs, and diversity is inherent in their backgrounds and confidence levels. Our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">team<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> includes everyone from PhD students who are not much older or more experienced than the students they are to teach, to retirees who have extensive subject-matter experience but are perhaps less familiar with contemporary teaching philosophies. <strong>Unit c<\/strong><\/span><strong>oordinators face the challenge of uniting disparate teams and ensuring clear and consistent delivery of expectations, content, and learning experience.<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> TAs may move through content and instructions at a pace that suits them rather than the stud<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ents; adaptivity in the classroom is something that can take a good deal of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to develop.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As a slow reader, I find the lightboard videos to be particularly helpful when I need to thoroughly learn new concepts, as is often the case when preparing to teach. Being able to go through the videos at my own pace allows me to grasp the material more fully.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211; BCMB2X01 TA<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The lightboard videos serve as a clear and concise practical guide, communicating the path for TAs to excel in their roles. Unlike conventional methods such as PowerPoint presentations or printed notes, <strong>lightboard videos offer a dynamic visual representation of <\/strong><\/span><strong>teaching in practice<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>,<\/strong> covering elements like the pace and flow of instruction alongside the academic content.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> TAs can then reflect on this to develop their approaches to teaching.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I found the videos massively helpful&#8230; Having <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">[academics]<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> step through the methods, give context to the calculation and draw pictures of the working, helped me understand what was happening, in a much more effective and efficient way than a textbook<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211; BCMB2X01 TA<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Moreover, <strong>the lightboard facilitates a mentoring environment, allowing experienced teachers to showcase their methods.<\/strong> We have pioneered a &#8220;double act&#8221;
