{"id":1879,"date":"2016-07-20T00:05:40","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T14:05:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/?p=1879"},"modified":"2017-03-30T08:14:52","modified_gmt":"2017-03-29T21:14:52","slug":"ensuring-teaching-resources-accessible-widest-possible-audience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/ensuring-teaching-resources-accessible-widest-possible-audience\/","title":{"rendered":"Ensuring your teaching resources are accessible to the widest possible audience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/news\/news.cfm?item=1104\" target=\"_blank\">April issue<\/a> of Teaching@Sydney outlined some simple ways in which\u00a0tools such as <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.sydney.edu.au\/news\/all\/2016\/05\/20\/tips-for-enhancing-word-and-powerpoint-document-accessibility.html\" target=\"_blank\">Word or Powerpoint\u00a0can be used<\/a>\u00a0to ensure that teaching resources are\u00a0accessible to the many students who have some level\u00a0of\u00a0visual impairment. Most handouts, lecture slides and manuals are made using these programs\u00a0although the principle of building in\u00a0accessibilty before conversion to PDF extends to other authoring tools,\u00a0including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csun.edu\/~hcmth008\/mathml\/acc_tutorial.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">LaTeX<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/docs\/answer\/6199477\" target=\"_blank\">Google Docs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.sydney.edu.au\/news\/all\/2016\/05\/20\/tips-for-enhancing-word-and-powerpoint-document-accessibility.html\" target=\"_blank\">easiest to implement of the\u00a0tips<\/a> is simply\u00a0to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.sydney.edu.au\/services\/marketing-communications\/brand-tools\/basic-design-templates.html\">University templates<\/a> for Word and Powerpoint, which are designed with accessibility in mind (and to resist reducing the font size). The PowerPoint, A4 document and event booklet templates have recently been updated by\u00a0Marketing and Communications with enhanced bar graphs for people with colour vision deficiencies.
