{"id":1817,"date":"2016-03-15T23:53:20","date_gmt":"2016-03-15T13:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/?p=1817"},"modified":"2016-08-01T11:26:47","modified_gmt":"2016-08-01T01:26:47","slug":"teach-like-nobel-laureate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/teach-like-nobel-laureate\/","title":{"rendered":"Teach like a Nobel Laureate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before the Sydney Ideas lecture on 11 March,<br \/>Nobel Laureate <a href=\"https:\/\/physics.stanford.edu\/people\/faculty\/carl-wieman\" target=\"_blank\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/physics.stanford.edu\/people\/faculty\/carl-wieman\" data-cke-saved- rel=\"noopener\">Professor Carl Wieman<\/a><br \/>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwsei.ubc.ca\/about\/sarah_bio.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.cwsei.ubc.ca\/about\/sarah_bio.html\" data-cke-saved- rel=\"noopener\">Dr Sarah Gilbert<\/a> facilitated a special workshop for students and teachers on teaching challenges and strategies in science education. The wide ranging discussion covered topics relevant to effective teaching in all<br \/>discliplines,<br \/>including motivation, engagement, active learning and assessment. Building on the rich collection of research-informed and practical tips and resources from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwsei.ubc.ca\/SEI_research\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.cwsei.ubc.ca\/SEI_research\/index.html\" data-cke-saved- rel=\"noopener\">Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative<\/a>, key ideas from the workshop included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/332\/6031\/862.full?ijkey=GMW4zTHNMM1Tc&amp;keytype=ref&amp;siteid=sci\" target=\"_blank\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/332\/6031\/862.full?ijkey=GMW4zTHNMM1Tc&amp;keytype=ref&amp;siteid=sci\" data-cke-saved- rel=\"noopener\">Evidence<\/a> that active learning approaches dramatically improve student learning and are<br \/>more enjoyable for both students and teachers,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.changemag.org\/Archives\/Back%20Issues\/2015\/January-February%202015\/better-way-full.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.changemag.org\/Archives\/Back%20Issues\/2015\/January-February%202015\/better-way-full.html\" data-cke-saved- rel=\"noopener\">Ways<\/a> to evaluate the effectiveness of undergraduate lectures and<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwsei.ubc.ca\/resources\/files\/Two-stage_Exams.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.cwsei.ubc.ca\/resources\/files\/Two-stage_Exams.pdf\" data-cke-saved- rel=\"noopener\">Increasing<\/a> the effectiveness of mid-semester exams and quizzes in
