{"id":1812,"date":"2016-04-09T23:49:57","date_gmt":"2016-04-09T13:49:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/?p=1812"},"modified":"2016-08-01T11:26:09","modified_gmt":"2016-08-01T01:26:09","slug":"small-changes-teaching-first-5-minutes-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/small-changes-teaching-first-5-minutes-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Small changes in teaching: the first 5 minutes of class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a series of articles in <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/Small-Changes-in-Teaching-The\/234869\" target=\"_blank\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/Small-Changes-in-Teaching-The\/234869\">The Chronicle<\/a>\u00a0from his book &#8220;Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons From the Science of Learning&#8221;,\u00a0James M. <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Lang\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_GB\">Lang<\/span> presents simple and practical ideas ideally suited\u00a0to try out in lectures.\u00a0In the first article, four\u00a0quick suggestions for grabbing students&#8217; attention at the start of the lecture are presented:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Give students a chance to answer one or two interesting questions, or even pose them online beforehand, then return to them at the end of the lecture.<\/li>\n<li>Review the previous lecture but flip the normal approach by\u00a0asking the students to tell you what the main points were.<\/li>\n<li>Initiate a discussion on what the students know about the topic already and probe any misconceptions they have.<\/li>\n<li>Ask the students to write down their responses to whichever of the exercises above you use.
