{"id":15713,"date":"2022-04-28T10:55:36","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T00:55:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/?p=15713"},"modified":"2026-01-06T19:35:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T08:35:19","slug":"using-peer-review-as-evidence-and-improvement-of-your-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/using-peer-review-as-evidence-and-improvement-of-your-teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Using peer review as evidence and improvement of your teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The wider uptake of peer review of teaching has the potential to make a valuable contribution to the advancement of higher education \u2014 among its various benefits, peer review can play an important role in assisting individuals to enhance their teaching, in recognising and rewarding skills and achievements in teaching, and in developing individuals\u2019 academic careers.\u00a0The more widespread and systematic the use of peer review of teaching, the greater the opportunities to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in universities.<\/p>\n<p>The DVC (Education) Portfolio has expanded the University-wide and centrally coordinated peer review\u00a0program to support teaching development,\u00a0building on the successful 2021 pilot and supporting similar\u00a0approaches already in place in Faculties, Schools, and the University.<\/p>\n<p>Read on to find out how you can sign up for a review.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-separator type-thin\"><\/div>\n<h2>Peer review for teaching &#8211; am I being judged?<\/h2>\n<p>Whether you are a new or experienced university educator, you can benefit from peer review for teaching (PRT). With a focus on\u00a0effective teaching practice, the PRT program is open to all teaching staff at the\u00a0University and\u00a0is easily accessible through <a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/16284\/pages\/12-dot-1-peer-review-of-teaching-module-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Module 12<\/a> of the\u00a0University\u2019s established\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/from-one-size-fits-all-professional-learning-to-choose-your-own-adventure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Modular Professional Learning Framework<\/a>\u00a0(MPLF).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The PRT program aims to\u00a0foster collegial and constructive feedback conversations around teaching delivery, unit design, learning\u00a0materials, Canvas sites, assessment, and other elements as relevant.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>What are the benefits?<\/h3>\n<p>PRT provides an opportunity to gain insight from other educators, learn more about pedagogical practice, and be reflective about how your students are learning and your own teaching practice. The process is a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/1360144X.2011.633753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">globally accepted and effective method<\/a> for the professional development of university teachers.<\/p>\n<p>There are a <a href=\"https:\/\/sydney.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/61USYD_INST\/2rsddf\/cdi_gale_vrl_3740000025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">number<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/vuir.vu.edu.au\/37547\/1\/PeerReviewHandbook_eVersion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">benefits<\/a> to PRT reported in educational research:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>develops collegiality and cohesion,<\/li>\n<li>builds trust and increases confidence,<\/li>\n<li>creates transparency,<\/li>\n<li>raises the status of teaching, improving credibility and integrity,<\/li>\n<li>enhances teaching practice,<\/li>\n<li>improves student learning and\u00a0student satisfaction,<\/li>\n<li>can be used to support tenure, promotion and re-appointment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At Sydney, the PRT program is helpful if you are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>seeking <strong>evidence for promotion, AP&amp;D, or teaching award<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>seeking <strong>a \u2018formal observation of teaching\u2019 authentication of practice<\/strong> as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/68081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sydney Educational Fellowship Program<\/a>, Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education), or Sydney Professional Certificate (Foundations in Higher Education).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;I personally found it <strong>encouraging and motivating<\/strong> when the reviewers&#8217; feedback validates some of my teaching practices. More importantly, my peers&#8217; feedback and suggestions were helpful to both improve my teaching practices and also to <strong>identify my blind spots in teaching delivery<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>feedback from Peer Review of Teaching participant (2021)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>How does PRT work?<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>peer review for teaching program includes 8\u00a0dimensions for review<\/strong> (see table below). Each reviewee can request a\u00a0specific focus from their reviewer in the pre-review\u00a0meeting.\u200b\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Co-ordinated by the Educational Innovation team, <strong>a\u00a0pool of expert reviewers are trained and ready to\u00a0go<\/strong>. They will work with you to understand the context\u00a0of your teaching they are reviewing and any areas\u00a0you would like to focus on.<\/p>\n<p>Once you sign-up (read on to find out how), <strong>each review follows a three-step process<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>A pre-meeting<\/strong> where the reviewer and reviewee connect to share relevant context and background of the teaching to be reviewed, and for the reviewee to share their objectives for the peer review process.\u200b<\/li>\n<li><strong>The review is undertaken<\/strong>, utilising a standard proforma which focuses on the 8 teaching dimensions.
