It&#8217;s an exciting time, but may be a bit unfamiliar for many of us who have been away from campus for a while. Most students have had a disrupted 2 years of learning. Help them to &#8216;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/learning-to-learn-after-lockdown-the-transition-journey-from-alpha-to-omega\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learn after lockdown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216; by demystifying how different classes work and what to expect: what&#8217;s a tutorial, why are they important, and where do students go? Campus is a big place; link to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/maps\/campuses\/?area=CAMDAR\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">campus maps page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; there are now even maps for indoor navigation!\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><b>Make your Canvas site homely<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Have a welcoming front page (complete with pictures or even a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/1316\/pages\/introduction-to-making-educational-videos?module_item_id=45285\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of yourself), FAQs, and a welcome announcement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><b>Plan for what happens if students are sick or isolating and unable to attend class<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Know about accessibility options, audio-visual equipment, and room capacity and see pictures of the space to help you plan teaching activities. You can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sydneyuni.service-now.com\/sm?id=sc_cat_item&amp;sys_id=6259e419db5650102d38cae43a9619e6&amp;sysparm_category=b7a50abd4fe297c054a346501310c75a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ask for 15 minute intro sessions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with ICT&#8217;s AV team.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><b>Check your class recording settings<\/b>. Try name tents for the first few weeks, and try handing them out yourself by week 3.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><b>Acknowledge the trauma of 2 years of COVID<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You might like to encourage the class to share one thing they have each learned about themselves during COVID or practice gratitude, which increases resilience. To kick things off, share yours first. Or try an easy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/support-students-with-a-values-affirmation-exercise\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">values affirmation activity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help students refocus on what they consider important. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/advice\/2020\/06\/03\/seven-recommendations-helping-students-thrive-times-trauma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trauma affects how students engage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and some students may have experienced serious trauma (death, illness, etc).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\" aria-checked=\"false\"><b>Know how to get AV help<\/b>. If there are unexpected issues with audiovisual technology, ICT prioritises &#8220;class in-progress&#8221; issues. Call the Shared Service Centre on 9351 2000 (or extension 12000 from internal phones) to get specialist support. <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.sydney.edu.au\/services\/it-phones\/it-services\/audio-visual-services.html\">Check out other guides on the AV support page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Over the first few weeks of semester<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Set some class norms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the second or third class, help build psychological safety by working with students to develop some classroom norms that are relevant for your cohort and discipline. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/creating-a-positive-learning-environment-using-classroom-norms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out a simple way to run this powerful activity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Keep encouraging student contributions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Design activities where students can contribute their ideas, opinions, and experiences in a safe and non-judgemental environment. Consider using some technology such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/interactive-polling-tools-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online polling tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/using-padlet-in-the-classroom\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Padlet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Make the most of being together physically<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Get students safely moving and interacting. Plan activities where students are working together in small groups e.g. using physical whiteboards or shared docs on their laptops to develop knowledge and ideas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Support students who disengage<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As the government\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/supporting-students-through-help-funding-changes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HELP funding changes hit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, disengagement risks students&#8217; access to this scheme. Consider how to best identify these students and reach out before census date. Also, provide links to support resources for students, which are <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.sydney.edu.au\/services\/student-support.html\">nicely summarised on the Intranet<\/a>.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Leave buffer time in all classes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If the last two years have taught us anything, it&#8217;s to expect the unexpected. Whether it is technology failure, the strangeness of being back in person, or just the thrill of a runaway discussion, building in buffer time will reduce yours and your students&#8217; stress.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Keep being human<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We (teachers and students alike) will all be readjusting to learning in person. Remember that there will be many traumas that we cannot observe. Let your students in and be upfront about your capacities and expectations. Be <a href=\"https:\/\/hbsp.harvard.edu\/inspiring-minds\/educators-its-time-to-put-on-your-compassion-hats\">kind to your students<\/a>, and be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-00663-2\">kind to yourself<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This semester, most of us will be heading back into the physical classroom.
