{"id":13379,"date":"2021-02-12T21:28:31","date_gmt":"2021-02-12T10:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/?p=13379"},"modified":"2021-07-17T21:25:35","modified_gmt":"2021-07-17T11:25:35","slug":"students-perspective-on-supporting-them-in-their-transition-to-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/students-perspective-on-supporting-them-in-their-transition-to-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Students&#8217; perspective on supporting them in their transition to university"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recently launched\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/canvas\/get-prepared\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Prepared<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0Canvas site<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0emerged from a collaboration between a group of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/28154\/pages\/about-us?module_item_id=995274\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student co-designers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0from a number of faculties across the University and Educational Innovation. They reflect a diverse and overlapping range of underrepresented student cohorts at the university, including first-in-family, low-socioeconomic, Indigenous, and regional students. In this article, three students from the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Prepared <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">team discuss coming to university, the challenges students can face on this journey, and the contribution <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Prepared<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes in this space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article was contributed by student members of the Get Prepared team (Michelle Cheung, Florence Borbe, Mahmoud Al-Rifai).<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2>The challenges of coming to university &#8211; Florence Borbe (4th year Education\/Arts)<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University can be a daunting place, like being a little fish in a big pond. Students may wonder what (and when) a \u2018census date\u2019 is, what a \u2018WAM\u2019 and \u2018SAM\u2019 represents on their transcript, and why they may have to take an \u2018OLE\u2019 or two. Clarifying important terms relevant to your\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unit of study and referring students to the glossary will help them to demystify university terms and procedures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Navigating a campus the size of a suburb<\/h3>\n<p><b>I\u2019ve been at this university for 5 years and I <\/b><b><i>still <\/i><\/b><b>get lost!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0I\u2019m sure you do too. Suggesting apps such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lost On Campus <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and emailing directions to hard-to-find rooms before your first class will ensure students don\u2019t arrive late or attend the wrong class!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Meeting new academic expectations<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every student wants to perform well. By taking the time to outline the essentials of your unit (e.g. a specific referencing style) and providing exemplar assessments of varying grades, you give your students the chance to understand what you expect of them. Emphasising the importance of time-management and staying organised is also key to academic success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Balancing the competing demands of life, work and study<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most students work casual and part-time jobs, whilst some have the added responsibility of caring for a relative. <\/span><b>Being empathetic and flexible in responding to their needs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as providing a 1 or 2 day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/students\/simple-extensions.html\">simple extension<\/a> can go a long way in helping them manage their commitments and mental wellbeing.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I felt incompetent, a burden on others&#8230;\u00a0especially as a commencing student of an esteemed institution such as the University of Sydney.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, students who are first-in-family face these challenges without a direct family source to explain things like how to enrol, making the transition to university an overwhelming experience. Personally, as the first in my family to attend university in Australia, filling out HECS forms, selecting units in Sydney Student, and navigating the learning management system (then Blackboard, now Canvas) during the initial stages of my enrolment were persistent challenges. I would have been lost without the help of friends, Australian-university-educated cousins, and the busy ICT support hotline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I felt incompetent, a burden on others, as I assumed I was expected to navigate the enrolment process with ease, especially as a commencing student of an esteemed institution such as the University of Sydney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is usually considered common knowledge amongst university staff and students can be completely foreign to some students, leaving them feeling confused, overwhelmed and isolated. These students may be apprehensive about seeking assistance from their tutors, lecturers, and peers due to fear of judgement. <strong>You can be their <\/strong><\/span><b>guiding light<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by providing opportunities for students to ask questions (after face-to-face classes, in Zoom drop-ins, by email, or on Canvas discussion boards), and even sharing your own experiences of transitioning into university. You could learn your students\u2019 names &#8211; some students can go all the way through university without a single person learning their name!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be attentive of the language you use. Make sure it\u2019s inclusive and doesn\u2019t marginalise.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Be open-minded, understanding and accepting<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The level playing field is not a level playing field at all. Not everyone has the same access to the same kind of education, knowledge, and social and cultural capital.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The participation and attendance of low-SES students can be inhibited by their lack of engagement with the subject matter. To accommodate this, curate learning activities that activate and build on your students\u2019 prior experiences, values, and strengths.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Avoid deficit thinking<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uphold the mindset that each and every student is capable of achieving anything.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid assessing or measuring student achievements based on assumptions and preconceived misconceptions about certain groups.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Your contributions to the lives of all students go a long way.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Thank you for everything you\u2019ve done so far and we can\u2019t wait to see what you\u2019ve got in store for the future to support students in their journeys to, through and beyond university.<\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>How does \u2018<i>Get Prepared\u2019<\/i> help tackle the challenges of transition to university?\u00a0&#8211; Mahmoud Al Rifai (2nd year Commerce\/Law)<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13386 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/MAR-bio-pic-.png\" alt=\"Mahmoud Al Rifai \" width=\"198\" height=\"203\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Prepared <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eases student transition by shining a light on what it\u2019s like to be at university and encourages students and their families and supporters to see themselves as a vital part of the learning process. The site features <\/span><b>two student-facing modules <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> one parent\/family\/carer\/community-facing module<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">h guide site users with key information, tailored advice, a range of inte<\/span>ractive exercises, along with engaging videos featuring current and past university students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/28154\/pages\/i-can-do-this\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Module 1,\u2018I can do this!\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is designed to motivate students to make the leap to university. By completing a range of resources and activities, students are able to connect with the many people and places that make up a university, and, most of all, see themselves as one of the most important parts of it. I struggled to make sense of the critical thinking required to excel at university.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/28154\/pages\/how-to-thrive-at-the-university-of-sydney?module_item_id=949269\"><b>Module 2, \u2018How to thrive at the University of Sydney\u2019<\/b><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provides some specific advice about the University of Sydney, its academic culture, and its learning spaces. Ultimately, it is designed to empower students to make the University their own. It guides students to:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Navigate their enrolment, studies, and degree<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find their way around the university&#8217;s places and spaces<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Navigate online learning\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participate effectively in class discussions and group work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manage study time and tackle procrastination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connect with peers (and be more confident doing it)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact tutors and lecturers\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access university support services<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These solutions will be particularly useful for high school and first-year university students who experienced a lack of support and connection while learning online during the COVID-19 health crisis. It is crucial that incoming students are made aware of the ways the University can support them and how they can connect with their peers and teachers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>University study marks a radical change from high school study. It invites anyone close to a university student to learn more about university spaces, life and expectations to inform <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/28154\/pages\/how-can-i-help-when-should-i-help?module_item_id=985822\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when<\/span><\/i> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they can offer support. Key supporters of first-in-family students, in particular, may come across information and approaches they may have never considered before and be better equipped to support \u2018their student\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To have a support team backing you every step of the way is invaluable&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The support of my parents was paramount when I began university. Without them, my experience would have been much harder.
