{"id":13309,"date":"2021-01-29T09:33:33","date_gmt":"2021-01-28T22:33:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/?p=13309"},"modified":"2021-07-17T22:09:04","modified_gmt":"2021-07-17T12:09:04","slug":"get-prepared","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/get-prepared\/","title":{"rendered":"Get Prepared: Helping students transition to university"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2020, the year like no other, a team of staff from Educational Innovation and students from across the university came together in partnership to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/28154\">Get Prepared<\/a>, an online educational resource to empower and support students and their families in transition to university.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Every big journey starts with a single step. This site is your first step to\u00a0<\/i><b><i>get prepared for your journey to, through and beyond university<\/i>.<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What is \u2018<em>Get Prepared<\/em>\u2019?<\/h2>\n<p><em>Get Prepared<\/em> is an <b>open-access Canvas site that supports and empowers students as they journey to, through, and beyond university<\/b>. The site was developed in partnership with a team of undergraduate student co-designers coming from a range of equity backgrounds and faculties across the University.<\/p>\n<p>Designed by students, for students, the <em>Get Prepared<\/em> site <b>aims to improve the transition experience by encouraging students to build upon their strengths and values and take ownership over their own learning.<\/b> <em>Get Prepared\u00a0<\/em>also teases out university&#8217;s \u2018hidden curriculum\u2019 (what students are expected to know intuitively about university study), explaining how to get around campus, how to prepare for academic study, and where to find support.<\/p>\n<p><em>Get Prepared<\/em> also recognises\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/07294360.2020.1837742?journalCode=cher20\">the important role that parents, family, and other key supporters play in supporting the transition experience<\/a>. One key feature of the site is a family module containing information, activities, and videos to help parents, families, and key caregivers support \u2018their student\u2019 as they navigate the University. By \u2018demystifying university,&#8217; the site encourages parents and families in ways to best support students on their university journeys.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Thanks to the input from the Get Prepared undergraduate student co-designers, <strong>students and families will engage with authentic, peer-reviewed guides to navigate the challenges of university<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By amplifying the voices of equity students as they recount their experiences coming to university, <em>Get Prepared<\/em> encourages an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Each page includes a video featuring a student co-designer introducing key messages and sharing some personal stories or tips from their own experiences at University. work with incoming students) and anyone supporting teaching to circulate the <i>Get Prepared<\/i> link amongst your student cohorts in the first few weeks of the semester to maximise their effective transition into University.<\/p>\n<p>We would be grateful if you could support the <em>Get Prepared<\/em> site by circulating it amongst your teams and networks inside and outside the university,
