{"id":11627,"date":"2020-01-22T16:46:20","date_gmt":"2020-01-22T05:46:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/?p=11627"},"modified":"2020-01-22T16:46:20","modified_gmt":"2020-01-22T05:46:20","slug":"important-canvas-updates-for-semester-1-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/important-canvas-updates-for-semester-1-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Important Canvas updates for semester 1, 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Canvas has been updated with new features and improvements, these include\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a consolidated\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">process for assignments involving Turnitin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a new gradebook, and a new optional alternative to the current quiz tool.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Turning off Turnitin Feedback Studio for marking<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The old Turnitin Feedback Studio approach for marking has been switched off.\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">This decision has been made\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to improve the student experience and to address\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ongoing technical issues with the integration between Turnitin Feedback Studio and Canvas gradebook. <strong>You can no longer create a Turnitin assignment using the &#8216;external tool&#8217; selection in Canvas.<\/strong> Instead, assignments that need Turnitin similarity detection need to be created as a standard Canvas assignment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For staff, this means there is one consistent approach to create, deliver, grade, and provide feedback on assignments across the University. For students, this means a consistent process for submitting and receiving grades and feedback for assignments. You already use standard Canvas assignments and Canvas SpeedGrader for assignment creation, marking, and feedback.<\/p>\n<p>If you currently use approach 2, you will be impacted by this change because you still use Turnitin Feedback Studio for assignment creation, marking, and feedback. For staff, there are three main implications:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>All marking of these assignments will now need to be completed in Canvas\u00a0SpeedGrader<\/strong> (i.e. approach 1)<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0rather than Turnitin Feedback Studio.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rubrics created in Turnitin Feedback Studio will need to be manually re-created in Canvas<\/strong> for use in Canvas SpeedGrader. Learn <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-12861-4152724129\">how to add a rubric to a Canvas assignment<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-12931-4152724107\">how to then use this rubric within Canvas SpeedGrader to mark<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>QuickMarks are not available in Canvas SpeedGrader.<\/strong> If you use QuickMarks, you will need to find an alternate approach to providing quick comments. One potential solution is to use the third-party tool Annotate PRO, which is a Chrome browser plug-in and allows pre-saved comments to be quickly inserted into Canvas SpeedGrader. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.11trees.com\/live\/canvas-and-annotate-pro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See how this works<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To facilitate this change<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0SEAMS will no longer copy Turnitin assignments from previous versions of your Canvas site(s)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hese\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will need to be created again. You will, how<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ever, retain access to old assignments so you can copy and paste the text of the assignment if necessary, and access any Turnitin rubrics and QuickMarks to migrate these across.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Guides for setting up assignments and grading can be found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/1316\/pages\/create-a-turnitin-assignment-option-1\">Teaching Resources Hub<\/a>, along with the links above. Also, check out this video that provides a 3 minute overview to Canvas SpeedGrader.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"vimeo-player\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/72662612\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">New Gradebook<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Canvas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0implemented a new gradebook<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0globally for 2020<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The new gradebook\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">introduces<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">new features<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that will<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0make it easier\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to use\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">providing a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0clearer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0layout and improved workflows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s critical that you understand the\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">grade posting policy feature<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to ensure\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">grades<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0release\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">when you expect them too. The new quiz tool\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">provides an\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">up<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dated modern<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0interface and other new features\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not available in the regular Canvas quiz tool.
