{"id":10843,"date":"2019-09-01T01:05:48","date_gmt":"2019-08-31T15:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/?p=10843"},"modified":"2019-09-03T15:58:50","modified_gmt":"2019-09-03T05:58:50","slug":"the-opening-learning-environment-18-months-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/the-opening-learning-environment-18-months-on\/","title":{"rendered":"The Opening Learning Environment: 18 months on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s now over 18 months since the Open Learning Environment (OLE) was <a href=\"https:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/welcome-open-learning-environment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">officially opened<\/a> as a key and innovative feature of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/study.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reimagined\u00a0Sydney educational experience<\/a>. The OLE was conceived to encourage and allow students to broaden their learning and explore individual interests outside their main discipline and build novel skill combinations for their studies and careers. Alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/students\/explore-open-learning-environment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for-credit units<\/a> taken by students in liberal studies (and <a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/handbooks\/interdisciplinary_studies\/units_of_study\/open_learning_environment\/open_learning_environment.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some other degrees<\/a>), the OLE contains fully online and free zero-credit point units <a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/4545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available throughout the year<\/a> for all students and staff.<\/p>\n<p><em>This article was contributed by Ruth Weeks and Adam Bridgeman.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Make-up of the OLE<\/h2>\n<div class=\"sc-columns half clearfix\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<p>The OLE opened in 2018 with 60 pairs of 0 and 2 or 6 credit point units and 8 standalone 0 credit point units. An additional 35 pairs were added in 2019 alongside a further 3 standalone units. Another 36 pairs and 2 standalone units are now being constructed for launch in 2020. The latter includes 11 pairs of 0 + 2 credit point units designed for higher degree by research (HDR) students. Coursework students can choose any combination of units whatever degree they are in and there are no pre-requisites. One of the aims of the OLE is to provide students with additional opportunities to develop the <a href=\"https:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/graduate-qualities-important\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">graduate qualities<\/a> and to do so in contexts outside their normal study areas.\u00a0The OLE provides opportunities for students to develop particular graduate qualities in greater depth than might be possible in most disciplines &#8211; for example, cultural competence can be studied in a number of OLE units. It also allows students to seek additional preparation in particular qualities and skills. The yellow bars in the figure show the number of units available by session type.\u00a0Enrolments in individual units vary considerably as shown below for 2019. These are shown by the blue bars in the figures. When selecting sessions, coordinators appear to be sticking to the traditional semesters. Of the intensive sessions, April appears to be the most popular with both coordinators and students whilst quite a few units are available in July with low enrolments. Alongside use of the unit of study survey (USS) data, a dedicated survey for students is about to be released to further understand how to further improve the current units and where the OLE needs to grow.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.sydney.edu.au\/contacts-campuses\/services\/education-portfolio\/contact-us.html\">Educational Innovation team<\/a> can provide support to colleagues who would like to further improve their OLE units. For example, we can run sessions on writing MCQs, improving feedback, and using group work. Information and resources to assist you in designing your site, including quizzes and assessments can be found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sydney.edu.au\/courses\/19011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OLE Resources Site.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The approaches needed to design and teach an OLE unit can be quite different to those needed for other units of study. All OLE units are blended, with elements of self-directed learning, and some are completely online. The <a href=\"https:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/education-portfolio\/ei\/teaching@sydney\/the-new-modular-professional-learning-framework-choose-your-own-professional-learning-adventure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Modular Professional Learning Framework<\/a>\u00a0(MPLF) offers a flexible way to build staff members&#8217; capacity for quality learning and teaching.
