Join us on Wednesday 23 July 2025 for the annual Sydney Teaching Symposium. This popular annual event highlights approaches to teaching and assessment developed by colleagues across the University which are practical, transferable, and student-centred.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Symposium details<\/h2>\n

Date<\/strong>: Wednesday 23 July 2025 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm AEST<\/p>\n

Venue<\/strong>: Face-to-face on Camperdown campus. A Zoom option will be available for some sessions. Venue and Zoom details will be emailed to registrants the day before the symposium.<\/p>\n

Audience<\/strong>: University of Sydney staff and students, as well as staff from other higher education institutions.<\/p>\n

Keynote presentation:\u00a0Professor Jason Lodge<\/h2>\n

Effort vs. efficiency: The role of AI in high-quality learning<\/h3>\n

The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has created opportunities and challenges for learning in higher education. New tools are being developed to assist with learning at an increasing rate. Concerningly, many of these tools are marketed on the premise that they can make learning easier and\/or more efficient. An extensive body of research demonstrates that the most effective learning often occurs when students encounter challenging and difficult learning experiences. This presentation will examine the research on the tension between increasingly engaging technologies and the demands of high-quality learning. The presentation will conclude with practical strategies on how to help students engage in self-regulated learning when using technologies such as AI.<\/p>\n

About Jason<\/h3>\n

Professor Jason Lodge<\/a> is the Director of the Learning, Instruction, and Technology Lab and Professor of Educational Psychology in the School of Education at The University of Queensland. Jason explores the cognitive, metacognitive, and emotional aspects of learning, particularly in higher education and with digital technologies, including AI. He also serves as an expert advisor to the Australian Government and the OECD on the use of technology in education.<\/p>\n
