Our readership is broad, stretching across Australia and the world, with over 17,000 subscribers to our periodic mailout. We welcome submissions under key categories of teaching tips, educational excellence, teaching research, and news and events.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What can I write about?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the name suggests, Teaching@Sydney, is a space for sharing anything that relates to teaching and learning at the University of Sydney. Potential stories might include examples of innovative teaching, an encouraging story of student engagement, an exciting teaching and learning project, an impactful tool or approach, or news about a recent grant, publication, or award.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are four key categories:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Teaching tips<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Practical tools, approaches, or guidelines for teaching, learning, and assessment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Educational excellence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Showcases, interviews, grant stories, or teaching success examples<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Teaching research<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Research findings, conference updates, or theoretical insights<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>News and events<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Announcements, workshops, conferences, grants, and awards<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the <\/span><b>Sydney updates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> category is used by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students) team to share university-wide updates on tools, learning spaces, or policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Posts can be full-length articles (approximately 1000 words), opinion pieces, interviews, or short updates, and can be multi-authored. For academic colleagues they may be considered non-traditional research outputs. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How does my article\u00a0get published?<\/h2>\n<p>There are several steps to publishing an article on Teaching@Sydney. Once logged in you will see the Teaching@Sydney dashboard. If you have any previous experience with using<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/about\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WordPress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for blogging, this may be familiar to you. If not, use the menu on the left-hand side of the page to navigate, and make use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpbeginner.com\/beginners-guide\/how-to-add-a-new-post-in-wordpress-and-utilize-all-the-features\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resources available online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your piece is co-written, all authors need to complete this step before the article is submitted for editorial consideration. See step 7 for more instructions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Step 2: Create your author profile (you only need to do this once)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you have logged in for the first time you will need to set up your author profile. You can access this via the menu on the left hand side of the screen. Go to \u2018Users &gt; Your profile\u2019. Add you contact information and upload a profile image using the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.gravatar.com\/support\/activating-your-account\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gravatar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feature\/service. Unless you wish to change your contact details or profile image, you will only need to do this once.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Step 3: Read other articles for style and content<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before writing, read existing Teaching@Sydney articles to understand what works well for our audience. This will save time in the editorial process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to look for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversational style \u2013 Notice how posts differ from academic writing: they use first person, avoid jargon, and prioritise clarity with short paragraphs and subheadings<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practical takeaways \u2013 Strong posts answer &#8220;What are the implications for broader teaching practice?&#8221; and &#8220;How can educators in other disciplines use or adapt this approach?&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transferability \u2013 Posts ground insights in specific examples while making them applicable beyond the author&#8217;s context<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">What to avoid:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discipline-specific content without broader teaching insights<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academic writing style (formal referencing, dense paragraphs, jargon)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theory without practical application<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When drafting, consider what a colleague in a completely different discipline could take from this post.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Step 4: Create a post<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After logging in to Teaching@Sydney, create your post via &#8216;Posts &gt; Add new&#8217;. If you&#8217;re new to WordPress, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpbeginner.com\/beginners-guide\/how-to-add-a-new-post-in-wordpress-and-utilize-all-the-features\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reference online resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for guidance. You can write directly into the content editor or copy and paste from a Word document.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Writing guidelines:<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teaching@Sydney is publicly accessible. We welcome a conversational tone but ask that you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write with professional respect for colleagues and students<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid content that could reflect negatively on yourself, others, or the University<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not include sensitive or confidential information<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obtain student permission before including their work<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always keep in mind the University of Sydney<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/policies\/showdoc.aspx?recnum=PDOC2011\/65&amp;RendNum=0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">staff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/policies\/showdoc.aspx?recnum=PDOC2011\/215&amp;RendNum=0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> codes of conduct, the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/policies\/showdoc.aspx?recnum=PDOC2011\/162&amp;RendNum=0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public comment policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/policies\/showdoc.aspx?recnum=PDOC2011\/140&amp;RendNum=0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICT resources policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=25013&amp;action=edit&amp;classic-editor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teaching@Sydney style guide<\/a> provides additional guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Step 5: Add media<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Images are the primary form of media used in articles, but videos and audio files can also be included. Images should be high quality but not larger than 2MB, with clear colours and good lighting. If using Creative Commons material, choose images that are well-lit, non-grainy, and suit your content.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Types of media:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>Feature image<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 The main headline image for your article. Add this using the &#8216;Feature Image&#8217; section on the left-hand side of your &#8216;Edit Post&#8217; screen or email to the <a href=\"mailto:teaching@sydney.edu.au\">editorial team<\/a>. This should relate to your article (literally or conceptually).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Embedded media<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Supporting images, videos, or audio within your article body. Add these using the &#8216;Add media&#8217; button underneath the post title. All embedded media must include alt text and captions. Refer to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visionaustralia.org\/business-consulting\/digital-access\/blog\/five-tips-for-writing-alt-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision Australia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> guidance for writing effective alt text.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Image attribution and sourcing:<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When uploading any image, add a caption including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Your own images:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Include image title, author (you), and date created<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Student work or images of students:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Obtain written permission from students before publishing. Include appropriate attribution in the caption<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Images sourced online:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Must be licensed under <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org.au\/learn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creative Commons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Include image title, author, date, and source location (e.g., Adobe Stock)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recommend using the University&#8217;s licensed Adobe Stock access (sign in at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/stock.adobe.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with your Sydney email). For other images, ensure you have permission to publish.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Step 6: Categorise the post and add tags<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Categorise your post: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the &#8216;Categories&#8217; tool on the right-hand menu to select where your article should be featured. Choose your faculty, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/educational-innovation.sydney.edu.au\/teaching@sydney\/core-pedagogical-principles\/\">principles guiding education at Sydney<\/a>, and one content section:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Teaching tips<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Practical tools, approaches, or guidelines for teaching, learning, and assessment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Educational excellence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Showcases, interviews, grant stories, or teaching success examples<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Teaching research<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Research findings, conference updates, or theoretical insights<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>News and events<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Announcements, workshops, conferences, grants, and awards<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Add tags to your post: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tags are keywords that help readers find your article. Use the tags tool on the right-hand menu. Aim for 3-5 relevant tags.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose from existing popular tags when possible (e.g., <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assessment<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student engagement<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canvas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feedback<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">active learning<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Create new tags only if existing ones don&#8217;t fit (e.g., avoid creating <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student-engagement<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student engagement<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> already exists).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Step 7: Multi-author posts<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By default, submissions can only be authored by one person. Ensure that multi-authored posts have been through internal author review before they are uploaded to WordPress, and that the below steps are completed before the piece is submitted for editorial review:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All authors must complete Step 1 (login) and Step 2 (create author profile) before submission<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you email the editorial team on submission (Step 8), include the full author list in the order they should appear<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The submitting author is responsible for ensuring editorial feedback is communicated to and approved by co-authors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Step 8: Submit for editorial review<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have saved your work, submit it for publication by clicking the &#8216;Publish&#8217; button in the right-hand menu next to your post. At the same time, email teaching@sydney.edu.au to notify the editorial team that your article is ready for review.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The editorial team will review your submission to ensure it meets the criteria for inclusion and will perform minor editorial tasks such as adjusting headlines, formatting, image captions, and links. There is no capacity for full proofreading, rewriting, or substantive editing, so please submit your article as close to publication-ready as possible (proofread, spell-checked, complete with images).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>If revisions are needed:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The editorial team will email you with requested changes. Make the revisions to your post in WordPress and email teaching@sydney.edu.au again to resubmit. If changes are applied, your post will progress to publication. If revisions are still not sufficient, the post will be sent back for further work. Major changes can be requested if posts are not aligned with core categories (Step 6) or do not show engagement with writing guidelines (Step 4). The best way to ensure your post is published is to engage with recently published pieces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>Turnaround time:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 6-8 weeks from submission to editorial decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Step 9: Your post is published<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congratulations \u2013 your post has been accepted! An editor will email you with a link to your published article.
