This popular event highlights approaches to teaching and assessment developed by colleagues across the University which are practical, transferable, and student-centred. This year, as we start shifting gears to a post-COVID reality, we will be discussing how we support students in perhaps unfamiliar ways of learning, how assessment and feedback can be reimagined, how to teach well again face-to-face, what it’s like to build relationships with students, how team teaching benefits us all and, importantly, how we can design and deliver inclusive and equitable learning experiences for all students.

Key details

Date: Monday 18 July 2022 from 9:00 am AEST

Venue: Face-to-face in the Abercrombie Building H70, with a live broadcast option for those who are unable to make it to campus. These include strategies to make students feel that they are an integral part of the unit (using pre- and early-semester surveys), weekly "look-ahead"s which sets up each week in an upbeat manner while also summarising the importance of the work that is to be done, personalised e-mails using Student Relationship Engagement System (SRES) at strategic points throughout the semester, "no-questions-asked" simple extensions, and my personal favourite: being their biggest fans.[less]

[1B1] It’s the little things: supporting student learning in the post-COVID environment
Bronwyn Simpson

Location: Abercrombie Building H70 Lecture Theatre 1130; Track 1B Zoom

Teaching the COVID generation requires targeted and thoughtful methods of student support. The challenge (and opportunity) presented by COVID has led to innovative and flexible ways of delivering teaching, which appear likely to continue into the future. The range of teaching options, including flipped classrooms, online teaching, asynchronous activities, HyFlex and face-to-face classes are an opportunity to meet diverse student learning needs as well as find the best match between content and delivery. However students need support to navigate their learning in this new environment, especially when last-minute changes are still common. This presentation will showcase methods for supporting students and their learning that have been well-received by students. Examples will include building student-teacher relationships (including experimenting with SRES), scaffolding learning activities through Canvas modules, building a learning community through interactive on-line activities, communication with students, asynchronous modules made available prior to Week 1, and creating applied, practical learning activities on-line.[less]

9:50 am

[1A2] Collaborating with students to develop curriculum and learning resources
Joanne Hart, Robert Chen & Bella Kontorovich

Location: Abercrombie Building H70 Lecture Theatre 1110; Track 1A Zoom

This presentation describes a pilot study where we collaborated with students to develop learning resources for the MD Program. Our students are stakeholders in our education relationship with deep insight into what resources they need to support their knowledge and skill development to meet the learning objectives, so it is logical to include students in developing their learning resources. They devised guidelines for good video resources, created a storyboard, scripted, filmed, animated and produced a short video tailored to the MD student audience. It is easy to feel invisible as a student amongst 760 other second-year biochemistry students, so we worked towards encouraging student-teacher communication throughout the semester. Although much of these were administrative, such as requests for simple extensions, reschedule of practical classes, or queries about assessment marks, our setup of SRES portals remind students that they can reach out if they need to. We also encouraged student-student connections by directing all questions about content to an online discussion board to allow onshore and offshore students to meaningfully interact with each other. Overall, designing with UDL has improved access and engagement for students at 'the edges' of the unit by creating outcome-focused teaching activities with multiple pathways to success for students.[less]

12:45 pm

[2A2] Smart Responses to Communicating: Developing a podcast assessment for first year students
Moira Dunsmore & Heather Shepherd

Location: Abercrombie Building H70 Lecture Theatre 1110; Track 2A Zoom

First year nursing students often start their degree with a fairly individualised concept of health and a narrow definition of the nursing role. We will provide an overview of our research-led teaching in this area which has spanned for over a decade and involves partnering with people with lived experience of mental illness to provide students with authentic learning experiences. This has included consumers sharing their personal stories of mental illness, roleplaying scenarios as part of assessments, co-designing scenarios and rubrics, and observing and providing feedback on students' performance in role-play assessments. Additionally, in 2022 we trained actors to enact scenarios of people experiencing psychosis for role-plays with Mental Health First Aid-trained students, with people with lived experience observing and providing feedback. This presentation aims to showcase the evolution of our approach in working with consumers to design, deliver and evaluate health education. We anticipate the presentation and discussion generated will be of value and interest to other educators who are interested in partnering with stakeholders and end-users of services to develop and deliver authentic educational material that can support students' learning and meet consumers' needs.[less]

[2B3] Create your own Padlet adventure
Andy Smidt & Toni Stanford

Location: Abercrombie Building H70 Lecture Theatre 1130; Track 2B Zoom

Padlet is a popular and versatile tool that can be used to share information, visualise complex diagrams, provide student feedback and provide anonymous feedback. This has seen many academics rethinking the nature of the lecture, moving them from the physical to the virtual. Online lectures require a different skillset to design and deliver, and different methods and metrics to evaluate their effectiveness. They also present significant opportunity for units to leverage the affordances of the medium and to share the perspectives from and stories from a diverse community of voices. To help the academics and students at the Business School deploy and enhance their approaches to the 'pre-recorded lecture', we have developed a set of design principles built from our Connected Learning at Scale approach. This presentation will share these principles in the context of how they have been deployed across 85 different units at the Business School. It will look at the critical importance of agency in the design of a post-pandemic education, where the lessons of the pivot can be used to design a new normal for teaching and learning at scale.[less]

2:00 pm

[3A3] Team-teaching to enrich team-based experiential learning when transitioning from face-to-face to online learning
Eliza Wu

Location: Abercrombie Building H70 Lecture Theatre 1110; Track 3A Zoom

This showcase draws on team teaching experiences in the Work-integrated Learning (WIL) and Capstone units delivered in the Business School during the pandemic.
